So I’ve been doing baby weaning on different foods for a few weeks and thought I’d give some feedback as to how it has been going.
You can see me making different baby food on TikTok here I am making fruit puree, in the beginning I started my son on just had 1 ingredient and we’ve been building his tastes buds slowly. He really likes fruit and on several occasions grabbed the spoon and tried to feed himself, much to my surprise.
Fruit Puree Weaning:
- Apple: As we had gone apple picking the first thing he tried was apple, we washed and peeled all the apples then boiled them until very soft. Once soft I then blended and used the fill and squeeze pouch system to store the puree.
- Banana: I peeled and then just mushed the banana with a fork until smooth
- Fruit mix: I used some berries, apple and oranges to make a fruit mix. Washing all the fruit first and pre boiled the apples I blended this all together and stored it in the reusable pouches
- Oranges and Apples: Again I took apples I had already cooked and added oranges this may seem like an odd mix but has been one of his favourites for breakfast
- Pear and Apple: Anything with Pear seems to be a winner! I washed then peeled the pear and blended it with the apple, once they are cooked.
Vegetable Weaning
- Broccoli, Cheddar cheese and Potatoes: I tried to give my son broccoli on it’s own and he looked at me with a face of utter betrayal so this is my compromise. You can see me make this puree on TikTok.
- Tomatoes and beef mince: Simple but yummy I actually had this leftover from making bolognaise.
- Carrot sticks: Boiled to the point of near mush!
So far his favourite is pear and apple puree!
He finally forgave me for giving him broccoli when I disguised the taste with cheese and potatoes.
I’m really enjoying the weaning process, It is a lot of effort but batch cooking and building up a freezer full is worth it! I would really recommend making things like aeroplane noises or saying here comes the choo choo train to encourage them to open there mouths. I tend to say “Say Ahh” and he will open his mouth for me to feed him now.
Now I have been weaning for a few weeks, what I have noticed is he has dropped a feed and he is starting to prefer food over milk. He will continue to have milk until he is 1 years old and after he has had puree he always is offered milk to make sure he is full as well as offering water when he is eating.
Products:
- BPA Free silicone bibs (trust me you need them to be able to catch any food spills!)
- Bowls and spoons
- Fill and Squeeze food pouches
