Blogmas Day 3: Christmas Traditions for Babies

Baby and mum next to Christmas tree

As it’s my son’s first Christmas I’m really excited to start creating christmas traditions and keepsakes. Being a first-time mum this is something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. Christmas traditions for babies might seem daunting or silly, however it is something you can do each year with them and that they can learn to associate with Christmas.

Christmas Traditions for Babies

  1. Each year I want to create a foot or hand salt dough ornament so we can compare each year how big he gets! This is also really fun to decorate and let them decorate with you. We’ve also decided to gift a few to our families for them to hang on their Christmas trees.
  2. Christmas Crafts – This year we’ve got a stencil of a reindeer for baby to paint with his hands which I’m sure he’ll love. Doing a simple craft with them can be really engaging and good fun.
  3. Photoshoot with the tree! We put up our Christmas tree yesterday and I’ve got a few outfits for him to have fun in. You could do it with anything even a bauble just have fun together being silly!
  4. A cute Christmas tradition for baby we’ve started is we let him pick an ornament to hang on the tree. Letting the baby or child pick out an ornament to hang on the tree I think is really special.
  5. Buy matching PJ’s! I love this tradition we started doing this when I was pregnant last year in December and I have wonderful photos of myself and my partner in matching PJ’s with my big bump.
  6. Christmas Carols – doesn’t have to be a religious service you attend. We are going to two in Norwich and one is at the local pub. I love attending church at Christmas I only attend for community and to sing along.
  7. Christmas Lights – This can range from a tree festival to a light walk. Norwich has a few tree festivals happening in different churches and Sandringham has a light show happening. From the reaction to the tree I will be taking him to a tree festival, he is so excited to see the lights!

Traditions for Parents to do

  1. Christmas Stocking! We’ll place his stocking by his crib once he is asleep so he sees it as soon as he wakes up. He may not understand yet but I’m sure he’ll be interested.
  2. Elf on the shelf – I think we will be starting this next year, as soon as he understands hide and seek we will be able to do this.
  3. Snow from the fireplace – Easy to create just fake snow going from the chimney to the tree with footprints
