Family Day Out: Apple Picking

One of my most favourite things to do during September is going apple picking.

Apple picking with a fruit picker on a sunny day

I love taking the dogs with us, Alice is a Goldador puppy and her mum Ivy is a Golden retriever. We’ve been doing it for so many years the dogs know what happens and they have learnt to pick blackberry’s and apples themselves.

This was the first time we took our baby with us and I had timed it so he could have his nap in the pram on the walk. It was a beautiful sunny day thankfully which really made it special.

We parked up and walked along with baskets in tow and the vital piece of equipment the apple picker!

The first time we discovered the apple trees we ended up trying to shake the trees to get them down as everyone knows the best apples are always at the top and out of reach. Having the apple picker has been an absolute dream to get the juiciest apples.

We had such a lovely time and are definitely planning on going apple picking again as soon as possible, I can’t wait to teach my son how to use the apple picker and cook with him next year.

Our preferred method of cooking the apples is to peel and take the core out we then throw them in a big pan with a bit of butter. I actually use water but you can use apple juice if you wish, then add as much cinnamon as you wish and brown sugar. The brown sugar combined with the apples has a caramelised effect which just reminds me of autumn.

I love adding the cooked apples to porridge in the morning or with yoghurt for a filling breakfast.
